Flying Soon? Here’s What to Pack for a Long Flight

Written by William Lee

What to pack for a long flight can make or break your travel experience. Sitting on a plane for hours isn’t easy, but having the right essentials can keep you comfortable, entertained, and refreshed when you land.

If you’ve ever been on a long-haul flight, you know the struggle. Your neck aches, your skin feels dry, and somehow, you’re both starving and bored at the same time.

The good news? A little planning makes all the difference. Here’s everything you need to pack for a long flight so you can travel like a pro.

Dress for Comfort

Airplane seats aren’t the most comfortable, so wearing the right clothes is key.

Go for loose, breathable clothing that lets you move easily. For bottomwear, leggings, joggers, or soft sweatpants work great. Additionally, a hoodie or lightweight jacket helps with temperature changes. Airplanes get chilly, and the last thing you want is to spend hours shivering.

Slip-on shoes make security checks easier and let you kick them off during the flight. Pack an extra pair of socks to keep your feet warm.

A change of clothes is also a good idea, especially if you have a layover or want to feel fresh before landing.

Entertainment Essentials

A long flight can feel even longer if you don’t have anything to do. Noise-canceling headphones are a game changer. They block out crying babies, chatty passengers, and the never-ending hum of the engines.

A tablet or laptop lets you watch movies, read, or get some work done. Just make sure to download content in advance since in-flight Wi-Fi isn’t always reliable.

A power bank is another must-have. Seats don’t always have outlets, and a dead battery mid-flight is the worst.

Stay Hydrated and Pack Snacks

Cabin air is extremely dry, so drinking plenty of water is important. Bring a reusable water bottle and fill it up after passing security.

Flight attendants do provide water, but those tiny cups won’t keep you hydrated for hours. Pack your own snacks to avoid overpriced airport food.

Go for protein-rich options like nuts, jerky, and granola bars. Fresh fruit and sandwiches also make great in-flight meals. Avoid salty snacks since they can make you even thirstier.

Travel Hygiene Must-Haves

A few small hygiene essentials can make a big difference after hours on a plane. Hand sanitizer and wet wipes help keep germs away, while lip balm prevents your lips from drying out in the cabin air.

Next, pack a toothbrush kit to freshen up before landing. And if you plan to sleep, an eye mask and earplugs can help block out light and noise.

Lastly, compression socks improve circulation and prevent swelling in your legs. They’re especially useful on flights longer than five hours.

Extra Travel Essentials

Some small items can make a big difference. Here are some examples:

  • Travel pillow: Supports your neck and helps you sleep better.
  • Chewing gum: Helps with ear pressure changes during takeoff and landing.
  • A small bottle of essential oils: Essential oils like lavender or peppermint can help with relaxation.
  • Important documents: Keep your passport, boarding pass, and travel papers within easy reach.
