Where to Stay in Lisbon?

In my last blog I featured the best restaurants in Lisbon, so now that you know where to eat let’s explore options for where to stay. Lisbon has 18 municipalities it can be overwhelming and hard to determine where to stay. The neighborhoods of Baxia, Chaido, Bairro Alto, Alfama, and Belém are colorful, charming, and are good choices since many of the major sights, restaurants, and shopping are located in these historic areas. There’s a lot to do in Lisbon, so here’s a list of 7 of the best hotels you might want to consider when planning your trip to Lisbon.

Teatro Boutique B&B   $-$$ 4-Star 

Located between the Chaido and Bairro Alto districts, this luxurious bed and breakfast is an adult only property and a convenient place to stay. The 15 rooms are uniquely decorated by a famous Portuguese set designer each with a private bathroom. Many of the rooms have floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city and river. Breakfast is served in the dining room or guests can choose to have room service delivered, and the staff provide daily housekeeping.

Lisboa Carmo Hotel    $$$-$$$$ 4-Star 

Set in downtown Lisbon with views of the Tagus River this boutique hotel is a 3-minute walk from the nearest metro stop, 7 minutes from Rossio Square, and 14 minutes from Lisbon Cathedral. Their 82 elegant rooms provide flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi and minibars. Some rooms are family suites and accommodate 2 adults and 2 children. Many rooms have views of the river. Complimentary breakfast is served in the contemporary restaurant.

Memmo Alfama      $$-$$$ 4-Star

Just steps from the Castelo de São Jorge this smaller adult only hotel offers gorgeous views of the Alfama neighborhood and Tagus River. The staff pride themselves on personalized service and it’s their goal to make you feel like you are at home. Custom packages are available to make your stay even more memorable and special. The 42 rooms are simple, clean and comfortable. Other amenities include an onsite wine bar, a restaurant, an outdoor pool, and a rooftop terrace.

Hotel da Baixa    $$-$$$$ 5-Star

This 5-star hotel is conveniently located just a 3-minute walk from Rossio train station, a 6-minute walk from the cafes and shops at Praça do Comércio, and 3 km from the 11th-century Castelo de São Jorge. It is an upscale boutique hotel with 66 large rooms each with spacious marble bathrooms. Some rooms are family suites and can accommodate children. Amenities include a chic restaurant, a bar with stone archways, and a warmly decorated lounge. Breakfast is available for a fee.

Hotel Avenida Palace   $$$-$$$$ 5-Star

Adjacent to the Restauradores metro station and a 3-minute walk from the historic Rossio Square. Built in 1892, the hotel has maintained its characteristic romanticism from the “Belle Epoque”. The Palace is a jewel among Portuguese hotels, combining regal and elegant architecture with modern comfort and personalized service. There are 82 rooms including three different styles of suites. The Junior suites are perfect for families traveling together. Amenities include: parking, a breakfast buffet, afternoon tea is available in a regal lounge, an English-style bar, and a modern fitness room.

Altis Belém Hotel & Spa   $$$-$$$$ 5-Star

A 5-star rated family friendly hotel that is very modern in design, adorned with artistic murals, and offers guests an elegant atmosphere to enjoy. This waterside property has received several awards and prestigious accolades from the international travel and hospitality industry. Among the many restaurants in the area, their restaurant Feitoria is Michelin rated, and provides foodies with an extensive wine list to peruse and delectable cuisine to taste. There is also a more casual gastropub and coffee shop onsite for quicker meals and light snacks. After a long day of touring guests can opt to unwind and treat themselves to a signature service in the beautiful spa. Additional amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, free parking and a courtyard garden.

Palácio Príncipe Real   $$$$ 5-Star

For travelers who love history and a taste of opulent living this is a hotel for you. Originally a private residence to of one the founders of Lisbon’s main newspaper, it dates back to 1877 and was privately owned until the 1980s. It was then turned into an office building until 2014 when the current owners Miles and Gail Curley began to renovate the building bring it back to life. Their goal was to work with local artisans and suppliers to provide the best of the best amenities for their guests. Although this property caters to adults, they can accommodate children who are over the age of 16. There are 28 beautiful suites each with a different décor theme. Guests can enjoy the large lawn and beautiful gardens surround the building, an outdoor swimming pool, the onsite restaurant serving up traditional Portuguese cuisine for lunch and dinner, as well as an ala carte breakfast which is available all day. Lastly, you can schedule a relaxing massage in one of their treatment rooms.
