ETIAS – European Travel Information and Authorization System

• The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new visa application form that will be required for visa-exempt travelers to enter the Schengen area, including Portugal, starting in May 2025.

• ETIAS will apply to citizens of around 60 countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, who previously did not need a visa to stay in Portugal for short stays up to 90 days

• The ETIAS authorization will cost €7 (around $7.50) and will be valid for 3 years or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

• Travelers will need to apply for ETIAS online at least 96 hours before their trip and receive approval before they can travel to the Schengen area or European Union, the ETIAS will be a Schengen Visa only, excluding the United Kingdom.

Portugal Golden Visa Program

The Portugal Golden Visa Program, officially known as the residence permit for investment activity (ARI), is a residency-by-investment scheme designed for non-EU citizens. It was launched in October 2012 to attract international capital to Portugal after the 2008 economic crisis. This program allows investors and their families to live, work, and study in Portugal, with the potential to obtain Portuguese citizenship within five to six years. The advantages of the Golden Visa include visa-free travel across the Schengen states, the right to live and work in Portugal, and the possibility of applying for Portuguese citizenship after holding the Golden Visa for at least five years. The program offers various investment options such as donations, business setup, investment funds, and more, with minimum investment requirements starting from €250,000. Applicants must comply with specific requirements like maintaining the investment for a minimum of five years and spending a minimum number of days in Portugal annually. D7 Visa for Residency

The Portugal D7 Visa, also known as the Passive Income Visa or Retirement Visa, is a residency visa introduced by the Portuguese government in 2007. It allows non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens to apply for residency in Portugal if they have a stable source of passive income.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the D7 Visa, applicants must meet the following requirements:
– Be 18 years of age or older.
– Have a clean criminal record.

1. Applying for the temporary D7 Visa at the Portuguese consulate in the applicant’s home country, which takes 4-8 weeks.
2. Applying for a residence permit with the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) in Portugal, which takes an additional 6-8 weeks.
