The Slovak Paradise
Slovak Paradise National Park, known to Slovaks as Slovensky Raj, is one of Central Europe's most thrilling hiking destinations, a wild plateau of deep forested ravines, tumbling waterfalls and crystal streams in the country's east. It is raw, exhilarating nature far from the crowds, and one of the great highlights of Slovakia's untamed eastern half.
What makes it unique is the way you explore it. The gorges are climbed one-way upstream on an ingenious system of fixed iron ladders, rungs, chains and footbridges bolted to the rock beside the cascades, turning an ordinary walk into a genuine adventure for the reasonably fit. Famous routes thread gorges like Sucha Bela and the Hornad Canyon past dozens of falls, with the water rushing just beneath your feet.
The park also shelters the Dobsina Ice Cave, a UNESCO site of glittering year-round ice, and meadow-topped viewpoints that open over the whole karst landscape of forest and limestone. Spend a morning hauling yourself up the ladders beside a waterfall, then climb to a plateau rim for the long view, and you will understand why this quiet corner stays with travelers long after they leave.
