The country

Few countries pack as much into one trip as South Africa. In the space of a week or two you can ride a cable car up Table Mountain with the city and two oceans at your feet, swirl a glass of pinotage on a Cape Dutch wine estate, trace the cliffs and lagoons of the Garden Route, and end the journey watching a leopard slip through the bush at dawn on a Kruger safari, all linked by an easy network of self-drive roads and short domestic flights.

This is a country built on the outdoors and the welcome. Mornings start early for the cool of a game drive or a hike; afternoons stretch into long lunches on a vineyard terrace or a slow drive along the coast; and evenings turn to the fireside ritual of the braai, the South African barbecue that anchors every gathering. The landscape and the mood shift quickly, from the cosmopolitan buzz of Cape Town to the silence of the Karoo and the wild edges of the bush, and learning to move with that rhythm is half the pleasure.

We design South Africa itineraries that balance the headline sights with the quieter moments in between: a private morning on the Cape Peninsula before the day-trippers arrive, a cellar tasting with the winemaker in Franschhoek, a walking safari with a ranger who reads the bush like a book. However you want to travel it, we build the route so each stop has room to breathe.

When to go

The best time to visit South Africa.

Remember the seasons run upside down here: the Cape is at its best in the southern spring and autumn, while the dry southern winter is when Kruger comes into its own. This is the year as we'd sketch it across the desk.

Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

Prime season Shoulder Quieter & better value

September–November

Our favorite window: spring brings wildflowers across the Cape, warm dry days, fine game viewing as the bush thins out, and whales off the southern coast, all before the peak summer crowds and prices.

March–May

Autumn in the Cape means the grape harvest in the winelands, warm seas and softer light, paired with excellent, comfortable safari weather up north as the heat of summer eases.

June–August

The dry winter is prime time for a Kruger safari: sparse vegetation and animals drawn to the waterholes make for the year's best game viewing. Cape Town is cooler and wetter, so we lean north and inland.

December–February

High summer is glorious on the coast, with long beach days in Cape Town and along the Garden Route, but it is peak season, so the marquee hotels and the Cape book up well ahead and prices climb.

Where to go

The regions of South Africa.

South Africa is really several countries in one, from the mountain-and-sea drama of the Cape to the vineyards of the interior valleys and the great game reserves of the northeast. These are the regions we weave together most often, each with its own landscape, table and pace, and we shape the route and the internal flights around the rhythm you have in mind.

Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula

Region

Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula

One of the world's great cities, cradled between Table Mountain and the sea: the cable car and the cliffs, the V&A Waterfront, the penguins at Boulders Beach and the drive to the Cape of Good Hope where two oceans meet.

The Winelands

Region

The Winelands

A short drive inland from the city, the Cape Dutch estates of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek sit among oak-lined streets and vine-striped slopes, pouring world-class wine and serving some of the finest food in the country.

The Garden Route

Region

The Garden Route

The scenic coast road east from the Cape: lagoons and indigenous forest around Knysna, the lakes and beaches of Wilderness, dramatic cliffs at the Tsitsikamma, and easy detours to ostrich country and elephant reserves.

Kruger & the Safari Northeast

Region

Kruger & the Safari Northeast

The classic Big Five country: the vast Kruger National Park and the luxurious private reserves of the Sabi Sand alongside it, where expert rangers track lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino on twice-daily game drives.

The Drakensberg & KwaZulu-Natal

Region

The Drakensberg & KwaZulu-Natal

The soaring basalt wall of the Drakensberg, the battlefields and Zulu heritage of the interior, and the warm Indian Ocean beaches and game-rich wetlands of the KwaZulu-Natal coast around Durban.

A sample journey

One way to spend a week in South Africa.

  1. Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula 1
    Days 1–3

Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula

Begin in the Mother City: the cable car or hike up Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, a trip out to Robben Island, and a full day driving the peninsula to Boulders Beach, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope.

  2. The Winelands 2
    Days 4–5

    The Winelands

A short drive inland to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek: cellar tastings on Cape Dutch estates, long lunches among the vines, and the gentle rhythm of oak-lined towns framed by jagged mountains.

  3. The Garden Route 3
    Days 6–8

    The Garden Route

Head east along the coast road: the lagoon and forests of Knysna, the lakes of Wilderness, the cliffs of the Tsitsikamma, and an optional stop at an elephant sanctuary or ostrich farm along the way.

  4. Kruger Safari 4
    Days 9–12

    Kruger Safari

Fly north to a private reserve beside Kruger for the finale: twice-daily game drives in search of the Big Five, sundowners in the bush, dinners under the stars and the deep quiet of the African night.

Every itinerary we build is bespoke: this is a starting point, not a package.

Getting around

By self-drive

The Garden Route, Cape Town to the Tsitsikamma

The Cape is made for the road, with manageable distances, excellent highways and constant scenery. You drive on the left, and the freedom to pull over for a viewpoint or a wine estate is half the appeal.
By domestic flight

Cape Town to Johannesburg in about two hours

For the longer hops, frequent comfortable flights link Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and the safari airstrips. They let you pair the Cape with the bush without long days in the car.
By fly-in safari

Johannesburg to a Sabi Sand airstrip

A short light-aircraft flight drops you at a bush airstrip near the lodge, where a ranger meets you and the game drives begin. The quickest way from the city into Big Five country.
By cable car & on foot

Up Table Mountain, around the City Bowl

Cape Town rewards walking, and the cableway lifts you to the top of Table Mountain in minutes. We book hotels so the harbor, the restaurants and the cliffs are outside the door.

Where to stay

Cape Town
Cape Town
We favor stays around the V&A Waterfront and the leafy slopes of the City Bowl for walkable access to the harbor, the cable car and the restaurants, with boutique hotels in Camps Bay and along the Atlantic Seaboard for sunset sea views.
The Winelands
The Winelands
A country-house hotel or wine-estate stay around Franschhoek or Stellenbosch puts the cellars, the oak-lined streets and the mountain views on your doorstep, an idyllic two or three nights of slow lunches and tastings between the city and the coast.
The Garden Route
The Garden Route
We mix lagoon-side lodges around Knysna and Plettenberg Bay with characterful inns along the coast, the perfect bases for forest walks, beaches and a detour to a nearby private game reserve before the onward journey.
Safari lodges
Safari lodges
For the bush we love the private reserves bordering Kruger, especially the Sabi Sand, where intimate luxury lodges offer off-road traversing, walking safaris and superb leopard sightings, with everything from family-friendly camps to romantic hideaways.

The hire cars, domestic and light-aircraft flights, transfers and lodge logistics are all arranged as part of every itinerary — everything is settled before you arrive.

Good to know

South Africa travel questions.

How many days do you need in South Africa?

Ten to fourteen nights is the sweet spot. Around ten nights comfortably pairs Cape Town and the winelands with a Kruger safari; closer to two weeks lets you add the Garden Route along the coast, the Drakensberg or a few beach days in KwaZulu-Natal at an unhurried pace.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

It depends on the focus. For a Kruger safari, the dry winter months of June to September offer the year's best game viewing, when sparse bush and busy waterholes make animals easier to spot. For Cape Town, the winelands and the Garden Route, the warm, dry months of roughly November to March are ideal, with spring and autumn striking the best balance for a combined trip.

Can you combine Cape Town with a safari?

Absolutely, and it is the classic South Africa trip. Cape Town and the safari northeast are linked by a two-hour domestic flight, often via Johannesburg, so you can pair the city, the winelands and the coast with a few nights in the bush in a single seamless itinerary. We handle the flights and transfers so the two halves of the trip flow together.

Is South Africa good for a self-drive trip?

Yes, especially the Cape and the Garden Route, where the roads are excellent, the distances are manageable and the scenery is constant. A self-drive gives you the freedom to stop for a wine estate, a viewpoint or a beach whenever you like, remembering that you drive on the left. For the longer legs and the safari we switch to domestic and light-aircraft flights, which we arrange as part of the itinerary.

Which is the best safari area in South Africa?

For most travelers we recommend the private reserves bordering the Kruger National Park, especially the Sabi Sand, which is renowned for its leopard sightings and superb Big Five game viewing. The private reserves allow off-road traversing and night drives that the main park does not, and the lodges range from family-friendly camps to romantic luxury hideaways. We match the lodge to how you like to travel.
