Abu Dhabi
Some buildings stop you the moment you see them, and Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of them. Rising in pure white marble against the desert sky, it is one of the largest mosques in the world, with space for tens of thousands of worshippers and a presence that feels both vast and serene. Eighty-two domes crown the roofline, slender minarets mark each corner, and long reflective pools mirror the whole gleaming facade, so the mosque seems to float above its own reflection. It was the great passion of the country's founding father, Sheikh Zayed, and it remains the heart of the nation, welcoming visitors of every faith.
Up close, the detail is extraordinary. The great courtyard is paved with one of the largest examples of marble floral inlay anywhere, a meadow of vines and blossoms worked in colored stone that spreads across the open square and climbs the slender columns of the colonnades. Inside the main prayer hall, the scale only grows: the floor is covered by the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, woven by hundreds of artisans, and overhead hang vast crystal chandeliers, the largest of them dripping with thousands of pieces of gilded glass. Every surface, from the inlaid walls to the carved arches, rewards a slow and respectful look.
The mosque is breathtaking by day, when the white marble blazes against a deep blue sky, but it is at its most magical as the sun goes down. A unique lighting system shifts gently with the phases of the moon, and at dusk the whole building glows a soft, cool blue, its domes and minarets mirrored once more in the still water of the pools. We help you time your visit for that golden hour into blue light, arrange respectful dress and a knowledgeable guide, and fit the mosque into an unhurried day in Abu Dhabi.
