Jamaica · The south coast
Across on Jamaica's quieter south coast, a single day delivers two of the island's best nature experiences. It is an easy run from the western resorts, and it trades the busy north-coast crowds for slow rivers, sugar country and green hills.
The Black River is Jamaica's longest, and a gentle boat safari carries you through its mangrove channels in search of the wild crocodiles that bask along the banks. From there it is a short drive inland to YS Falls, where seven tiers of cascades spill into clear pools, with a rope swing for the brave and shady lawns for everyone else.
We like to round out the day with a tour and tasting at the Appleton Estate, Jamaica's storied rum distillery in the Nassau valley, before the drive back to the coast. It is a relaxed, scenic loop through the island's gentler side.
