The Danube Bend, Hungary

The Danube Bend.

The Danube Bend

Just north of Budapest, the mighty Danube sweeps through a dramatic curve between forested hills, the Danube Bend, a region of riverside towns, hilltop castles and great views that makes one of Hungary's loveliest day trips or short escapes.

The artists' town of Szentendre is a delight of cobbled lanes, pastel baroque houses, galleries and cafes; upriver, Visegrad is crowned by the ruins of a medieval royal citadel high above the river, with a panorama over the bend; and Esztergom, Hungary's former capital and religious heart, is dominated by the vast domed Basilica, the largest church in the country, rising above the water across from Slovakia.

Reached easily by road, train or a scenic riverboat from Budapest, the Danube Bend pairs castles, art and river scenery in one beautiful sweep.
