Chefchaouen, Morocco

Chefchaouen.

Morocco · The Blue City

Tucked high in the Rif mountains of the north, Chefchaouen is the town that everyone photographs and nobody quite believes until they see it. Lane after lane is washed in blue, every shade from powder to deep cobalt, climbing in steps between white rooftops and red-tiled eaves.

It is smaller and gentler than the imperial cities, and that is the point. There is little to tick off and a great deal to simply wander, pausing for mint tea on the main square, climbing to the viewpoint above the town, and watching the blue change color as the light moves through the day.

Give it a night or two and you will fall into its rhythm. We pair it with Fes or the northern coast, since the drive through the green Rif hills is a pleasure in itself, and we send you out to photograph the lanes early, before the day-trippers arrive.
