The Sahara at Merzouga, Morocco

The Sahara at Merzouga.

Morocco · The desert

For many of our travelers, the night in the Sahara is the part they talk about for years. Out near Merzouga, the great dunes of Erg Chebbi rise like waves frozen mid-roll, glowing copper at dawn and deep rose at dusk, and the silence at the top of one is something you feel as much as hear.

The journey there is half the magic. We arrange it as an unhurried overland trip from Marrakech, crossing the High Atlas and threading the gorges and palm oases that lead to the sand, with a stop at the fortified kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou along the way.

At the edge of the dunes you trade the vehicle for a camel and ride into the sand at golden hour, the old caravan way, to a tented camp set among the dunes. Dinner under the stars, a little drumming around the fire, and a sky so thick with stars it feels close enough to touch.
