Washington, D.C., United States

Washington, D.C..

USA · The capital

The nation's capital is a city built for walking and for wonder. Laid out along the green sweep of the National Mall, Washington gathers the monuments, memorials and museums that tell the American story into a few square miles you can explore on foot, and most of the very best of it costs nothing at all.

At one end of the Mall the domed Capitol crowns the seat of Congress; at the other, the Lincoln Memorial looks back across the reflecting pool to the Washington Monument. In between stand the great Smithsonian museums, world-class and free, while the White House sits behind its famous fence a few blocks north. In spring the cherry blossoms turn the Tidal Basin pink and the whole city seems to celebrate.

Two or three nights is plenty to take in the headline sights without rushing. We help you secure the tours that need booking ahead and shape a route that leaves time to simply sit on the Mall and take it all in.
